Your Symptoms Aren't the Problem. They're the Message.

Here's something that might surprise you. Your symptoms are not the problem. They're the message. They're your body's way of tapping you on the shoulder to let you know something's up.

Somewhere along the way, especially as women, we were taught that a healthy body is a silent one. No bloating, no slumps, no surprises. Perfect, all day, every day.

So when something starts playing up, we take it personally. Maybe you bloat after you eat. Maybe your energy can't keep up with everything you want to get done in a day. Maybe your cycle feels really different, the aches and pains have crept in, or brain fog has you feeling like a stranger in your own head. Or the one I see most in clinic: weight that won't budge no matter what you try.

And then the thoughts start. I hate how my body does this. What's wrong with me? This is my fault.

I want to challenge that. Because it's not going to help you.

Step one: stop being so mean to yourself

This way of thinking is so common that most women don't even notice it's happening. But underneath it sits a quiet belief that your body is working against you, and that belief changes how you treat yourself.

It sends you searching for the next pill, the next protocol, the next quick fix, without ever pausing to ask the questions that actually matter:

  • Why do I feel like this in the first place?

  • When did it start?

  • Has it been getting progressively worse?

Symptoms are feedback, not failure

I bang on about this all the time, and I'll keep banging on about it.

Your body isn't static. It's constantly adapting, moment to moment, to everything you give it. Your stress load. Your sleep. What you eat and when. How much you move. The quality of your relationships. The demands on your nervous system. Every one of those inputs shapes how you feel.

Life also comes in seasons. Some seasons pile on more stress, less sleep and zero time for yourself, and in those seasons it's really easy to stop noticing what your body is telling you.

So when a symptom shows up, it isn't your body turning on you, and it isn't you failing. It's your body communicating with you. Think of it like the warning light on your car's dashboard. Ignoring the light doesn't fix the engine. Understanding what it's pointing to does.

We actually want those warning lights. What we don't want is to be so disconnected that the signals build and build until, before you know it, you're dealing with something much bigger and much harder to turn around.

The key is listening in

If life feels flat out right now, with a never-ending to-do list that's left you disconnected from your body, please don't beat yourself up. This is exactly where I come in. A big part of my role as a Clinical Nutritionist is helping you understand what's going on and getting you tuned back in.

It's about getting curious and listening in. It's not about judging yourself for having symptoms in the first place.

Your body is so smart. Your symptoms are its own internal messaging system, translating what's happening on the inside into something you can actually notice on the outside.

Why "it's just your age" doesn't cut it

So many of the women I see have been told, one way or another, that what they're feeling is just getting older, or just their hormones, and there's nothing to be done about it.

NOTHING annoys me more. How very dare we keep telling women this. We should always listen to our bodies, and it is NEVER too late to take care of yourself.

Your 40s and beyond can be some of the most energised, clear-headed years of your life. This is not a decline, and I'm sick of hearing women say they feel like they're becoming invisible. That vitality is what happens when the systems that actually run the show (your gut, your liver, your hormones, your nervous system and your metabolism) are supported rather than overlooked.

When those systems aren't running well, your 40s can start to feel pretty dramatic. But here's the thing. Perimenopause isn't causing the chaos. And it's not all in your head either. Perimenopause shines a light on the issues that were already there. The things you could get away with ignoring in your 20s and 30s no longer have your hormones propping them up, and that's why everything feels so much more intense in peri.

Your age isn't the problem. Treating every symptom as a mystery to medicate, rather than a message to understand, is the problem.

What it looks like to actually listen

Listening to your body isn't about becoming obsessed with every twinge or ache. It's about understanding how your body works well enough to ask better questions when something feels off.

Instead of asking "How do I make this symptom go away?", start asking "What is this symptom telling me about what's going on underneath?"

That's the root cause approach, and it sits at the heart of how I work with every client. Rather than reaching straight for a quick fix, we get curious about the why. I look at your blood test results, your health history and your body data, so we're working with your actual biochemistry, not guesswork.

This one shift changes everything. You go from feeling like your body is unpredictable and unreliable ("why me?") to actually understanding it. And once you understand it, you're not guessing anymore. You know what your next best step is.

You don't need fixing

This is the part I really want you to hear. You don't need fixing. You are beautiful, you are clever, and you still have so much value.

I'll say it again. You don't need fixing. You need to understand your body well enough to know what it's asking for, and to trust yourself enough to respond to it.

That's not going to be found in the next trend, the next restrictive plan, the next fitness challenge, or whatever is infiltrating your algorithm right now. It's a slower, steadier kind of knowledge. But it's the kind that lasts, and it's the kind that gets you back to living the life you actually want, with more energy, more clarity, and a whole lot more trust in yourself along the way.
